We hope this newsletter finds you all healthy as we move into the cold season. Reflecting on the past year, AHHA has experienced significant challenges and set backs. We want to express our gratitude to our wonderful volunteers who make all of the things we accomplish possible. No matter the contribution, the resources you share make significant differences for our organization and its mission. We look forward to sharing many more of these opportunities with you in 2024. We also want to thank our individual and organizational donors for awarding AHHA funding to support our endeavors, especially the mobile shower CARE-A-VAN. Thank you for your donations of non-perishable items for the Food For People bin in their Hunger-Fighter Challenge. We will continue to seek grants and community support as well as hold fundraisers. We totally appreciate your generous donations of winter clothing and other winter gear, as well as supplies for our outreach services. We couldn’t do what we do without you all. Every one of you is AHHA in action. We anticipate a cold winter and look forward to providing fresh clothes and hygiene products for essential care to our unhoused neighbors. We ask you to join us this Thursday December 21st from 4 - 9PM for Homeless Person’s Day of Remembrance. We will hold a candle light vigil at 6PM at the Gazebo in Old Town. There will be hot food, hot beverages, and water for participants to show our gratitude. Please bring donations of coats, jackets, hoodies, sleeping bags, blankets, gloves, hats, hand warmers, men’s pants (size 32-38). We remember, together with others in scores of communities across our nation, those who have died in the past year while unhoused. We strengthen our resolve to work for a world where no life is lived unhoused and no person should die for lack of housing. 35 unhoused people died in the last year in Humboldt County (Source). The number is higher, as several are not recorded. We thank all of those who have partnered with us throughout the year, especially the three extremely challenging years of COVID and so much more. We wish all our friends, housed and unhoused, the very best in the new years. We hope you will join us for the Day of Remembrance. Here’s the schedule for the Care-A-Van. We encourage our guest to show up on time for sign ups in order to receive a shower that day. Reach out to sign up for shifts. We need help with the shifts marked with an *: Eureka at the Samoa Boat Launch under the Samoa Bridge, 8am-2pm. Sign ups for shifts beginning at 9am. Dec.19th* Jan. 2nd*, 16th* and 30th* Arcata at the Transit Center parking lot across from the Annex, 10am-3pm. Sign ups for shifts beginning at 11am. Jan. 11th McKinleyville at Church of the Joyful Healer 1944 Central Avenue, 10am-2pm. Jan. 20th* In person training with the Care-A-Van, an actual hands-on training, can be on site at the Samoa Boat Launch on Waterfront Drive, under the bridge, or at any operations site. Consider becoming a volunteer, board member, or committee member.Call for more information 707-298-1466 or 707-267-4035 Affordable Homeless Housing Alternative’s General Assembly is on January 6th 2024 at the Labor Temple (840 E St) in Eureka. Lunch at 11:30am and meeting at noon. We’ll be reconvening after the holidays and taking input for our strategic planning, in addition to going over the information on volunteer training. We really hope that experienced volunteers feel called to share their experience with the new volunteers during training in January. Humboldt Housing & Homelessness Coalition (HHHC) members is made up of organizations and individual who provide services and resources for the unhoused. They are planning for emergency weather/warming centers for people experiencing homelessness. Volunteers are needed.
