This Saturday the 5th, AHHA (Affordable Homeless Housing Alternatives) will be hosting an open forum to discuss the shelter/housing crisis and the humanitarian crisis in Humboldt County for the unhoused.. The meeting will take place at 840 E Street in Eureka, with food sharing and chat from 11:30 am to noon. The Forum will start at noon and go until 2 pm. Same time frame as the previous General Assemblies held on the first Saturday of the month. Please come join with your community to address these critical issues. You can attend in person or via zoom: Join Zoom Meetinghttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/87152587559?pwd=UQ0DyId1IoghuALsVlOFjN3mTRj2I8.1 Meeting ID: 871 5258 7559 Passcode: 248383 We'll hear from people with the lived experience of houselessness, some providers of services for the unhoused, volunteers, and Humboldt community members in discussing the needs and experiences of the unhoused, as well as the history of the housing crisis in Humboldt. Participate in discussions about the impact of significant events like the clearing of the Palco Marsh and on-going sweeps of people and property and increases in policing towards unhoused people after the Supreme Court handed down the decision regarding Grants Pass v. Johnson. That decision stated that people experiencing homelessness can be arrested and fined for sleeping outside when there are no safe alternatives. You have a voice and your opinion matters, bring your thoughts, ideas, and feelings, so we can all find solutions to the housing crisis and make Humboldt a more fair and equitable place.
Also learn about the history of AHHA, an organization dedicated to making Humboldt County a better place, and about more opportunities to get involved with volunteer positions and future events. Through the outreach services and the Care-A-Van, AHHA distributes food, clothing, hygiene products, and showers throughout Humboldt County on a weekly basis, moving between Eureka, Arcata, and McKinleyville, and is always accepting volunteers.
AHHA will also be participating in National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week from November 16th to 24th, with a rally as well as articles on their blog and in newspapers. And on December 10th AHHA will be commemorating World Human Rights Awareness Day by shining light on policies from the clearing of Palco Marsh, Grants Pass v. Johnson, to the recent executive order permitting the clearing of homeless encampments from Governor Newsom. Please come add your voice, talent and compassion to these activities. They provide great opportunities to educate and inform our community members and leaders. Lastly, AHHA will be observing National Homeless Person Remembrance Day on December 21st, the longest night of the year. Every month we lose 3 or 4 unhoused people in Humboldt County to the streets, and this day is meant to honor all those we have lost. AHHA understands how many people in our community care about this issue, and would love for you to join and help in making a difference.
